getting ready to say good-bye

Addicted. I developed my love for the DC in college. I continued to love it in Grad School but I could still take it or leave it.  And then...I had children and the feeling of the first sip of a fountain Diet Coke brought me such immense pleasure, I imagine it is how some people feel about a first drink of wine. I don't drink alcohol at all, it makes me feel sick to my stomach. So for years and years as other people have been drinking wine and cocktails I've been hanging with my Diet Coke.

No more cold, fizzy carbonation. A small sacrifice for the chance at a healthier life.

The time has come to say good-bye. I will need to find that deep sigh  in something else. Some other way to soothe a frazzled moment.

I know this will be hard. It's like saying good-bye to an old friend.

Question: if you loved carbonated drinks in the past, what do you enjoy now that you are banded?

  1. O-M-G! You are JUST like me. I don't drink any alcohol I get so sick even from a little sip of it. I have not had it in years and years. I too was a diet coke addict before surgery. I went cold turkey the day of my surgery. I avoided soda all together the first year being banded - after that I sometimes allow myself one soda if I feel like it. I usually don't. I might have a soda 1 or 2 times a month, if that. But I DO NOT have diet coke, ever. It's been almost 2 years since I've had it and I still can't believe I gave it up! You can do it! =)

  2. I was a Diet Cokeaholic for many, many years. It was one thing during all diets, fads, whatevers...that I would not give up. Not until I was banded. I gave it up cold turkey when I started my pre-op diet in 1/10. I finally had on in 12/10 and I thought it didn't even taste that great. Every once in a while I miss it, but mostly I don't.

Now I drink coffee in the morning and I have become obsessed with plain old iced tea sweetened with Splenda. :) I also drink Vitamin Water Zero at night when I want something different.

I'm pre-surgery also, and very much looking forward to following your journey :) I will get my surgery date on the 23rd! YAY!

  4. I was an addict as well until I saw a documentary on the chemicals in diet drinks. Sweet Misery. It's on hulu.com if that helps at all! Good luck with it all. I was just banded as well. so we are close in our time frame!

  6. I was addicted to diet soda (coke & dr. pepper). I probably had 5 cans a day or more in some cases. I dreaded the loss of that drink more than anything else that came with getting the band. I have to say, at a year out, I really don't miss it all that much. I've probably had 4 or 5 sodas since I was banded (most of them in the last few months) and can barely do it with pleasure. It has to get flat and takes me so long to drink that I just don't get the satisfaction. I know its a scary loss. It really is. But I can absolutely PROMISE you that you won't miss it as much as you think you will. Good luck!
