day 5

I'm sort of ready to get back to real life. I am still having some real shoulder discomfort and after weaning off the loritab this weekend I am feeling more sore. I am also having some discomfort in my upper diaphragm, I am assuming that is where the hernia was repaired.

There is also only so much yogurt and soft liquidy type foods one can take. I am pretty low energy and think that will help when I transition to mushies. Mostly, I can not believe I am on the other side. I can't lie- I love the feeling of not being hungry. Physically hungry. I am noticing that I seem to want to munch at night regardless of the hunger- my  mind is so used to the habit. I am trying to be clear on the emotion, address it and move on. I think there will be a lot of that in my future.

I wonder if that emotional need/desire to snack will ever go away? Veteran bandsters?

  1. I still have "head hunger" issues especially as it relates to emotions and boredom. But I am learning to know the difference and learning how to control it. It's a journey! :)

  2. Thanks for your comment on my blog!

It sounds like you are doing okay. The pain subsides, of course. I still sometimes want to munch even after 14 months and sometimes I still do, but mostly I feel pretty sane in my current relationship to food.

I'd like to follow your blog, but I think you might have the following disabled. If you didn't do that intentionally and you switch it over, stop by my blog and let me know! I'll send you some followers.

  3. Hi there! Amanda Kiska sent me over! It's nice to get new followers so I am definately going to follow you.

I was banded 3 weeks ago and now I'm in what is affectionately known as bandster hell. I can only eat about 1C of food but I'm hungry frequently due to no restriction. The pain will pass I promise. The entire first 7 days I cried at least once a day and truly thought it was the worst thing I ever did to myself voluntarily. I have since day 8 and on decided that I'm GLAD I did this and that it's going to be the tool to finally get my over eating under control.

Everything I've read says that the band cannot do anything about "head" hunger. We just have to get off the couch when it strikes and try to do something else. I've also found that SF popcicles are very nice in the evening if the head hunger tries to get me. Only 15 Calories so it's not a deal breaker. Hang in there, it gets better.

  4. Hey! Amanda sent me!!!!

OMG, I can't believe I didn't make the connection. I had discomfort in my chest at times to, sometimes it was a little scary, but I never even thought about it being because of the hernia that was repaired!

Looking forward to following your journey. I'm only a little over 5 months out, so I'm still learning, and have not gotten a hold on the head hunger, although I don't snack nearly like pre-band.

  5. Congrats on being banded! The emotional head hunger goes through phases. You'll never be rid of it completely but I think you'll find that it happens a lot less once you've hit that green zone, so that when it does happen you just accept it and try to make the next day better. You'll find a balance that works for you.

  6. Hi, Amanda sent me too. Congratulations on your banding. I had the shoulder discomfort for about a month and the doctor attributed it to the hiatal hernia repair he did at the time of my surgery. It was annoying but I survived it. As for the head hunger, I still deal with it now and I am 3 years out. Like they say the lapband is just a tool it's not the answer to all our prayers. You will learn to deal with it and sometimes you may give in to the head hunger but thankfully the band won't let you go too far overboard. All the best to you and I will follow you too.

  7. Hiya! Amanda Sent me over!
I am a few months out myself and head hunger is still an issue. Not all the time mind you. Mostly during hormonal times. I did have shoulder discomfort myself it was gas related and gasx helped a bit. Best thing for me was walking walking walking! Even if it was just up and down the hall!

During the mushie stage refried beans were such a satisfying meal option for me! I could add a little sour cream or greek yogurt and then some cheese if I wanted! Love it!
